Here's a brief overview of the relationships between L and some of the Death Note characters.

All along, L has targeted Yagami Light as his main suspect for being Kira (which is true), however, he lacks the evidence to nail him down. Both L and Light (as Kira) aim to outdo each other in their battle of wits and cat-and-mouse game. However, Light is also L's "first" friend and L has once mentioned that he hopes his deduction is wrong even though to admit his mistake would hurt his pride. Eventually, L indirectly dies in the hands of his "only friend" who cleverly manipulates and tricks Rem into writing L's name into the Death Note.

Watari, whose original name is Quillsh Wammy, is both L's assistant and a renowned inventor and founder of the Wammy's house, an orphanage for gifted children. He usually acts as the middleman between L and his clients and the police which enables L to keep his identity and whereabouts a secret. He is also the middleman for the other 2 top detectives in the world, which are played by L.

Near and Mello are both orphans at the Wammy's house and look up to L as their role model. Both are possible candidates for being L's successor, but the untimely death of L meant that there wasn't any final decision until Mello "gave up his rights" to Near.

He is Light's father, and also an investigation officer of the Japanese police force. In order to catch Kira, L joined forces with Yagami Soichiro who then leds his team under L's command. He does not always approve of L's actions, but follows his orders anyway.

L was suspicious of Misa all along as being the second Kira. When Misa gave him a peck on the cheek when he said that she was the most suitable for Light, L warns that he might "fall in love" with her. However, they became friends instead.

An ex-FBI agent, she used to work under L on one assignment. She has inexplicable trust in L, but L only vaguely recalls hearing her name somewhere, until Watari retrieves her data from the computer.
